An apartment block fire killed at least 41 and injured dozens more in Kuwait today.

The inferno erupted in a six-storey building in Mangaf City in the Ahmadi Governorate shortly before 6am local time on June 12.

A senior police commander told state media: 'The building in which the fire occurred was used to house workers, and there was a large number of workers there. Dozens were rescued, but unfortunately, there were many deaths as a result of inhaling smoke from the fire.

'We are always alert and warn against packing too many workers into housing units.'

Kuwait Deputy Prime Minister Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah said at least 41 people were killed. A number of them were Indian migrant workers.

He said: 'Unfortunately, the greed of real estate owners is what leads to these matters.'

The Ministry of Health said 43 injured people were hospitalised, including several severely wounded individuals who were moved to various hospitals.

Authorities said the fire was contained and its cause was being investigated.
