Brazil: Weather emergency in southern Brazil has killed 173 people since the end of April

Porto Alegre, RS, Brazil - June 12, 2024

The number of people who have died since the end of April as a result of the storms and floods caused by the weather emergency in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, in the southern region of Brazil, has risen to 173, after the body of another person was found lifeless in the last few hours, the Civil Defence reported Sunday.

The institution detailed in its report that 38 people are still missing, while more than 2.3 million people have been affected in 478 municipalities since the emergency began on 29 April.

The Civil Defence said the water level has already dropped in the main cities of Rio Grande do Sul, a Brazilian state bordering Argentina and Uruguay, in the worst state disaster that has also left damage to agriculture and industry.
