Falling rocks claim life of tourist in China’s scenic area
On 12 June, a tragic incident occurred in the Wawushan Scenic Area in Meishan, southern China, when a female tourist was struck and killed by falling rocks while taking photographs.
The rocks, weighing between 10 to 20 pounds, fell from a significant height with tremendous force, shattering tiles on the steps below. The impact caused the woman to collapse instantly, with her condition appearing dire. Despite the prompt response from bystanders who called emergency services and attempted to assist, the tourist sadly succumbed to her injuries.
In response to the incident, Wawushan Scenic Area authorities immediately closed the affected area and conducted a thorough inspection and risk assessment. The scenic area has also announced plans for a comprehensive safety review, focusing on monitoring and maintaining regions prone to rockfalls.
