Workshop on China-Africa Agricultural Science and Technology Cooperation under the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) South-South and Triangular Cooperation Framework kicked off in Sanya, south China's Hainan province on Wednesday.

The three-day workshop aims to deepen China-Africa agricultural science and technology cooperation, and promote the modernization of African agriculture.

The participants prospected the mechanism and prospects of China-Africa agricultural science and technology cooperation, and made precise docking on the support needed for Africa to increase food production and the added value of agricultural industry.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): SUN TAN, Deputy head of Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences (CAAS)
"To face challenges such as climate change, shortage of natural resources and geopolitical conflicts, China-Africa agricultural cooperation calls for more scientific and technological innovation. Africa has a lot of room for innovation, and the need for agricultural technology is particularly urgent. China's technology and experience are of great importance to Africa in addressing food security and poverty.
The CAAS has jointly established a laboratory for green agricultural development with Egypt so as to improve green agricultural development in Egypt through joint research. We have taught biogas technology to Tanzania, Mauritania, Angola and other countries to help build multiple sets of biogas facilities and carry out technology demonstration and promotion of circular agriculture."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): LAILA LOKOSANG, Senior Technical Advisor, African Union Commission
"And now, with China being very much intensifying tropical agriculture research for the crops that mostly produced in Africa, like cassava, like maize, potatoes, and so on, we want to enrich this discussion, not only the discussion, but the strategies for development of this sector. And research, advances in research, applied in some countries in Africa, which is actually working, the successes from these researches, and we need to make sure that it is scaled up to other countries as well, so that it benefits larger populations."

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): FELIX DAKORA, Former president of the African Academy of Sciences, Foreign academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering
"I've seen a lot of good seed material, high yielding, very nutritious, that have been developed here (China). Personally, I'd like to see them tested in Africa, on African soils, to see whether they are still high yielding and whether they still have the same qualities that we see in China, it is absolutely something that fascinates me."
