Switzerland: UN officer highlights significance of International Day of Dialogue among Civilizations
Geneva, Switzerland - Recent
Storyline:
China's proposal to set up the International Day of Dialogue among Civilizations is a significant development within the United Nations (UN) system, according to Rolando Gomez, chief of the Press and External Relations Section of the UN Information Service in Geneva.
The 78th session of the UN General Assembly (UNGA) unanimously adopted a resolution on June 7, put forth by China, to establish this day.
In an interview with the China Global Television Network (CGTN), Rolando spoke highly of the International Day for Dialogue among Civilizations, noting its alignment with the trajectory of the UN.
Rolando expressed optimism that despite differences, the international community can work together to resolve issues.

"Sure. Well, this day is indeed a very significant development in the UN system. The day itself is really meant to promote mutual understanding and bridge cultural divides, etc., precisely what we here at the UN does. Moreover, it's really about promoting understanding, tolerance, cooperation, and, increasingly, in a culturally diverse setting in which we work. And this is precisely in the spirit of what we do here in the UN, and specifically here in Geneva, where we host thousands and thousands of meetings per year. So, we do need that sort of dialogue among various groups and civilizations indeed.";

5. SOUNDBITE (English) Rolando Gomez, chief, Press and External Relations Section, UN Information Service in Geneva:
"It's these states led decisions, of course, at the end, having more states that can sign on and support China in this case is most welcome. We always encourage consensus outcomes in whichever UN body is discussing, whether it's the General Assembly, the Human Rights Council, which meets here in Geneva, Security Council, of course, we always push for consensus. Of course, it's up to the states to decide on that. But one thing I would like to add is that despite any differences there may be, you have this unique setting behind me here where views which are often not heard elsewhere are heard. And let's face it, there are issues which certainly cannot be discussed bilaterally, not even within regions that really do require the concerted efforts of the international community.";
