Speeding pickup bounces over crossing railway
This is the moment a speeding pickup truck bounced over a crossing railway in Thailand.
CCTV footage shows the vehicle roaring across the Pak Nam Pho level crossing in Nakhon Sawan province on June 9.
As the pickup dashed over the tracks, it was launched several inches into the air before landing on the road. The momentum nearly sent the truck veering off the pavement.
Montree Meekhiew, the stationmaster of Pak Nam Pho railway station, said: 'Many cars have almost skidded off the road in this area, despite the numerous warning signs placed hundreds of metres ahead.'
He urged drivers to be careful as the level crossing was slightly elevated due to an ongoing railway construction.
Ekkarat Sriarayanpong, head of the State Railway of Thailand (SRT) governor's office, reminded motorists to abide by the Land Traffic Act of 1979, which states that drivers must reduce their or stop their cars no less than five metres away from a level crossing.
He said: 'The SRT is taking measures to reduce accidents at level crossings by installing signs and warning lights. Staff have also been instructed to compile data on illegal crossings that need to be closed.
'Additionally, the SRT plans to collaborate with local organisations to install automatic train barriers. However, the most effective solution is for drivers to strictly follow traffic laws.'
Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.
Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.
