Indonesian volcano erupts amidst protests in support of Palestine
Mount Marapi, an active volcano in West Sumatra, Indonesia, spewed continuous plumes of thick smoke throughout Saturday, June 15, 2024, coinciding with large-scale demonstrations in support of Palestine.
Footage from the city of Bukittinggi captured the imposing sight of Mount Marapi, located in the Agam Regency, releasing volcanic emissions throughout the day.
The eruption occurred on the same day as a rally organized by thousands of people under the banner of the "Alliance of People Concerned for Palestine."
A convoy of vehicles adorned with pro-Palestine paraphernalia, accompanied by a long march of participants carrying Indonesian and Palestinian flags, converged towards the city's center.
Placards carried by the protesters demanded that the Israeli regime liberate the Palestinian people from their occupation.
Demonstrators urged the Indonesian government to support the freedom of the Palestinian people and send troops to liberate Palestine.
Participant Sri Rahmayanti emphasized the shared bond between Indonesia and Palestine, stating, "Those in Palestine are also our brothers and sisters who are being slaughtered by the regime. Therefore, we must raise our voices for the independence of our brethren in Palestine. They were promised that Rafah was the safest place, but upon reaching Rafah, they were immediately massacred by the regime."
The Indonesian government recently expressed its readiness to deploy troops and humanitarian aid, including doctors, hospitals, and volunteers, to Gaza-Palestine.
