A one-eyed tiger has been returned to the forest following months of rehabilitation in Thailand.

The tigress named Balakol was released into the Thap Lan National Park, far away from community areas, in Nakhon Ratchasima province on June 6.

She was previously staying at the Huai Kha Khaeng Wildlife Sanctuary in Uthai Thani, where she was treated for an eye wound, an injured left paw, and malnutrition.

Balakol has been fitted with a radio tracking collar to monitor her movements and ensure she does not endanger people.

Weera Khunchairak, deputy director-general of the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation, said Balakol was estimated to be around two years old, with a body length of 1.60 metres, a height of 55 centimetres, and a weight of approximately 105 kilogrammes.

Since Balakol was deemed in good health, authorities have decided to release her into the Thap Lan forest. They said her presence will help enhance the genetic diversity and abundance of the forest ecosystem.

Weera said: 'This tigress is a subspecies found in Southeast Asia, so the prey animals are of the same subspecies. Even though there are tigers in the Thap Lan forest, we believe that Balakol will be able to adapt. Moreover, tigers are predators that naturally do not prey on their own kind.

'Currently, the staff are closely monitoring to assess whether Balakol can hunt prey and thrive in the Thap Lan forest.'
