An American base jumper missing for three days has been found dead in a valley in India.

Trevor Bokstaahlar, 31, visited the Himalayas to go exploring but went missing while hiking in the Spiti Valley in the northern province of Himachal Pradesh on June 13.

Police were informed of his disappearance by his father, who said his last known location was in Kaza town.

Trevor's corpse was finally found on June 16, after search teams spotted vultures circling over an area of the ravine.

Mayank Chaudhary, Superintendent of Police, Lahaul and Spiti, said: 'A rented motorcycle of the victim was found abandoned near Tashigang town on June 13. Until June 15, there were no clues about the body.

'On June 16, we noticed a bunch of scavengers like vultures hovering over a particular object. Using binoculars, we confirmed that there was a human body.'

A drone deployed to aid the search also found a parachute, said to belong to Trevor, lodged in a ravine between Kee and Tashigang on June 14.

Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) today, June 18, have successfully retrieved Trevor's body in a daring mission that lasted 48 hours.

They said they were hampered by falling rocks but managed to bring down the American's body from 14,800 feet.

Preliminary investigations suggest that Tervor's death was an accident.

Local police said his body will undergo a post-mortem examination, and will be handed over to the American Embassy.
