STORYLINE:
The Hong Kong stock exchange will no longer suspend trading during typhoons and other severe weather conditions from Sept. 23, Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Chief Executive John Lee said on Tuesday.
Hong Kong stocks and derivative products can be traded as usual even when the city issues warnings for typhoons at or above the Typhoon Signal No. 8, or the Black Rainstorm Warning, said Lee. Trading of A-shares through the Shanghai-Hong Kong and Shenzhen-Hong Kong stock connects will also proceed despite the weather alerts, he said.
Hong Kong's major market participants including brokerages and banks are in favor of the new arrangement, said Lee, citing results of a public survey conducted earlier by the Hong Kong stock exchange.
Keeping stock market open during severe weather conditions will strengthen the competitiveness of the Hong Kong stock exchange and consolidate Hong Kong's role as a two-way portal to the global financial market and the Chinese mainland market, Lee noted.
