A Vietnamese man was arrested for allegedly smuggling cigarettes into Thailand.

The suspect, identified by police only as 'Vu', reportedly ordered more than 500 cartons of Vietnamese-brand cigarettes from another Vietnamese national through Facebook.

Villagers reported Vu to police claiming he was a nuisance, parking in front of other houses, making loud noises, and carrying boxes of goods into his residence at night at the housing estate in Samut Prakan province, around 19 miles away from the capital Bangkok.

Police raided Vu's home and found hundreds of boxes of cigarettes on June 18.

He allegedly admitted to smuggling the products, which he planned to sell on the black market.

The suspect said he received the cigs through Ubon Ratchathani province bordering Laos.

Police Colonel Sumet Janewongpitak, superintendent of Samut Prakan Immigration Police, said: 'The suspect was charged with possessing goods without paying taxes. He was handed over to the inquiry officer for further legal action.

'This arrest is the result of strong community cooperation, which allowed police to catch the suspicious individual who violated the Excise Tax Act of 2017. We urge the public to inform police about groups of foreigners acting suspiciously, entering the country illegally, working without a permit, or smuggling illegal goods.'
