Massive rescue operation evacuates hundreds of stranded tourists in India
The administration in northeastern India successfully evacuated 1,225 tourists on the second day of rescue operations, following severe landslides and heavy rainfall.
Video filmed in Mangan District in Sikkim on June 18, shows the rescue team skillfully guiding stranded tourists along rugged mountain paths.
The route proved challenging, but everyone managed to navigate it with determination.
Since last week's multiple landslides and heavy rains caused significant disruptions and casualties, the Sikkim administration has been actively involved in rescue efforts.
On June 18, a significant effort resulted in the evacuation of 1,225 tourists from Lachung and nearby areas of Mangan district. These tourists had been stranded since June 12th and 13th.
Rescue operations, which began on June 17th, received crucial support from the Trishakti Corps troops. According to a statement from PRO Defence, tourists were transported on foot or by vehicle where possible, as landslides had blocked regular routes.
Additional District Magistrate (ADM) Vishnu Lama confirmed the successful evacuation, saying, "We have evacuated 1,225 tourists from Lachung and surrounding areas, bringing them to Mangan town by road today." The operation became feasible after the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) restored connectivity between Chungthang and Mangan with a new bridge at Toong over the Teesta River.
Weather permitting, the remaining tourists are expected to be evacuated by Wednesday (June 19).
Responding to ongoing safety concerns, including property damage and road blockages, the Mangan district administration has ordered the immediate closure of all government schools in the district to ensure student safety amid challenging conditions.
