The Port of Baltimore welcomed the USS Fort Lauderdale, USS Gonzales, and Cape Wrath through the newly-reopened Fort McHenry Federal Channel on Thursday, June 12, 2024, marking a significant milestone ahead of Maryland Fleet Week.
In a series of captivating time-lapse videos, the vessels navigated the 700-foot-wide by 50-foot-deep channel, freshly cleared of wreckage following the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge on March 26. Unified Command's diligent efforts culminated in the successful removal of debris, ensuring safe passage for maritime traffic once again.
Maryland Fleet Week organizers and maritime officials hailed the reopening as pivotal, allowing planned events to proceed smoothly. The arrival of naval vessels underscored the resilience of the Port of Baltimore and its importance in hosting national and international maritime activities.
