USA: Hands Off Fawns in Colorado Springs to Save Them from Orphaned Fate
Colorado Springs, USA - June 18, 2024
A recent sighting of a fawn in Colorado Springs has prompted a reminder from Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) about the importance of leaving seemingly abandoned wildlife undisturbed.
In a statement issued by CPW Southeast Region, officials cautioned against intervening with wildlife, particularly fawns that may appear alone. The agency emphasized that fawns are often left alone by their mothers for extended periods while the doe searches for food.
"It is not an orphan," CPW clarified, noting that the fawn observed in Colorado Springs had a mother nearby, hidden from view. The doe's natural behavior involves leaving the fawn lying motionless as it waits for her return.
CPW highlighted the risk of human interference, explaining that picking up a fawn can disrupt its natural survival instincts and potentially lead to orphaning if the mother perceives human scent on her offspring.
"Fawns have natural camouflage and no scent, allowing them to evade predators," CPW explained. "Disturbing them can compromise their safety."
The agency encouraged concerned individuals to contact CPW for assessment if they encounter wildlife in apparent distress or unsafe conditions. CPW reiterated that while fawns may appear lost or abandoned, their mothers are often nearby, ensuring their safety in the wild.
As wildlife sightings increase during spring and summer months, CPW advises the public to enjoy observing from a distance and to resist the urge to interfere with natural behaviors that ensure the survival of Colorado's wildlife.
