Joliet, IL, USA - June 18, 2024

A heartwarming act of kindness by a Joliet police officer has captured the community's admiration after he rescued a snapping turtle from a precarious situation near Rock Run Greenway Trail.

The Joliet Police Department recently shared a touching video showcasing the officer's encounter with the sizable reptile, which unfolded on May 18. Body-worn camera footage depicts the officer guiding the turtle to safety as his patrol vehicle blocks traffic.

In the footage, the officer can be heard coaxing the turtle with gentle encouragement, "Go back the other way, come on," before carefully lifting the creature with both hands. As the turtle reacts by bobbing its head, the officer offers soothing words, "You're fine," ensuring the distressed reptile feels secure.

With great care, the officer then places the snapping turtle onto the sidewalk near a grassy area, where it had been aiming to go.

The gesture highlights the department's commitment to animal welfare and community safety, embodying the dedication of law enforcement to go beyond their regular duties to ensure the well-being of all residents, both human and animal alike.
