STORYLINE:
The Dutch Herring Wholesale Association held its traditional auction of the first barrel of herring in Scheveningen, a coastal district in The Hague, on Tuesday.
The first barrel of herring, known in Dutch as "Hollandse Nieuwe," refers to the initial catch of young herring cured in brine.
This event is highly anticipated each year, and the first barrel is traditionally auctioned for charity. This year, the first barrel was auctioned for 81,000 euros, with the proceeds going to charity.
The Netherlands has a deep and historic connection with herring, a small oily fish that has been a staple in Dutch cuisine for centuries.
Nowadays, herring is much more than just a fish in the Netherlands. It is a cultural icon and an integral part of the nation's heritage and culinary tradition.
Traditionally, herring in the Netherlands is consumed raw with onions and pickles. The customary way to eat it is by holding the fish by its tail and eating it whole, biting upwards.
