Pretoria, South Africa - June 19, 2024

Storyline:
Cyril Ramaphosa, leader of South Africa's ruling African National Congress (ANC), on Wednesday took the oath of office as the nation's president for the next five years at a ceremony in Pretoria, the administrative capital.

In his address at the ceremony, Ramaphosa said that the South African government will continue to strive to achieve economic recovery, improve people's livelihoods, and achieve social equity. This includes strengthening education and medical services, combating crime and corruption, and promoting social unity and national development.

Simultaneously, he promised that South Africa would meet the challenges brought by climate change and promote economic integration and development across the African continent. He called on all parties, civil society, labor, business, and other formations to engage in a national dialogue on the critical challenges facing the nation.

Ramaphosa, 71, was reelected on June 14 as South African president by the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament with 400 members, receiving 283 votes. His opponent, Julius Malema from the Economic Freedom Fighters, garnered 44 votes. Under the South African Constitution, once elected by the National Assembly, the president-elect must assume office within five days.

He was elected as the president of the ANC in December 2017 and re-elected in December 2022. In May 2019, the ANC won the general election, and Ramaphosa was elected as the president of the country.
