Bangkok, Thailand - June 9, 2024

Thailand on Tuesday became the first country in Southeast Asia to legalise same-sex marriage, following a historic vote in parliament that was hailed as a "victory" for the LGTBI+ community.

The Senate passed the law by 130 votes in favour, with four against and 18 abstentions, and the text will now be sent to King Maha Vajiralongkorn for promulgation and will come into force 120 days after its publication in the Official Gazette.

With the entry into force of the legislation, Thailand will become the third place in Asia to allow equal marriage, after Nepal and Taiwan.

LGTBI+ activists hope that it will be possible to celebrate the first equal marriages in the kingdom in October.
