A huge sinkhole opened up as a road collapsed near an under-construction metro station in southern China.

The incident was filmed in Chengdu City, Sichuan Province, on June 21.

Residents from nearby neighbourhoods reported hearing a loud noise followed by the appearance of a large hole in the road, exposing a void underneath.

Authorities swiftly responded to the scene after the incident. Preliminary surveys revealed that the collapse was caused by the rupture of two water pipes, one with a diameter of one metre and the other 0.3 metres, buried approximately two metres deep. The rupture resulted in a crater approximately 12 metres long and 10 metres wide.

Luckily, due to the early hour of the incident, few pedestrians were present, averting any casualties.

Emergency protocols were immediately activated, with authorities shutting off the burst water pipes and closing the affected area with barriers to ensure safety. Traffic control measures were implemented, redirecting vehicles to alternative routes to maintain safety.

Currently, the incident has not directly impacted the construction and operation of Chengdu's rail transit system. Authorities are conducting a thorough investigation into the cause of the incident and have begun repairs to restore normal traffic conditions promptly.
