A sea lion pup became the first to be born at 119-year-old Point Defiance Zoo and Aquarium in Tacoma, Washington.

Footage shows the newborn weighing 17 pounds waddling in her enclosure near her parents, Eloise and Boomer.

The pup was born on June 6, and curator Jen DeGroot said she had already been trying to explore her surroundings, including the water.

Head Veterinarian Dr Karen Wolf said the pup received a neonatal exam and a course of antibiotics for a mild respiratory infection, but she was now well.

The zookeepers said they vigilantly watch over the pup, utilizing a 24/7 camera to monitor her progress.

The pup will continue bonding with Eloise in the coming weeks before being in the pool alongside other sea lions and seals.

Eloise and Boomer were paired by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums' Species Survival Plan (SSP), which they said aims to ensure a genetically diverse and sustainable sea lion population. Both sea lions were rescued before finding their home at Point Defiance Zoo in 2019.
