Sudan: Sudan conflict sparks refugee crisis, dashing hopes for return
Port Sudan, Sudan - Recent
Storyline:
Over 10 million Sudanese people are refugees in their own country, a staggering number laid bare on World Refugee Day, which fell on June 20th.
The latest figures released by the United Nations International Organization for Migration this month show that more than 10 million Sudanese people have fled the fighting in their homes since the fierce clashes between the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) erupted on April 15 last year.
The armed conflict broke out in the capital Khartoum, and then spread to other areas and continues to this day, leaving the North African country in a severe refugee crisis.
Many refugees fleeing war zones have flocked to the SAF-controlled Sudan Port in the northeast. The port city on the Red Sea now has a total of 112 refugee centers, each accommodating between 200 and 300 people.
Mahasin Ali, who originally lived in Khartoum, lives in a tent at one of the refugee centers with her family.
The constant flow of refugees into Port Sudan has left aid supplies often in short supply.
Today, the battle between the SAF and the RSF in the capital is still very tense, forcing more than 3 million people in the area to leave their homes.
The warring sides of the year-long conflict are not showing any signs of reaching a truce. Refugee camps in many places have often been the target of shelling and burning.
The blockade of major transportation routes by both sides has severely hindered the transportation of food, medicine and other supplies, which has made the humanitarian situation in Sudan even worse.
According to UN statistics, 18 million people in Sudan suffer from acute hunger, with 3.6 million children acutely malnourished.
