In China, 5G technology is ushering in a new era of smart and connected transportation systems that are redefining the mobility landscape.

In eastern China recently, a vertical take-off and landing vehicle completed a successful cross-sea cargo test with help of 5G.

Experts say in the future, aircraft like these could be used for low-altitude logistics and maritime rescue missions, with ultrafast 5G services key to their operations.

Liu Yifan, wireless network optimization engineer, China Mobile Zhoushan Branch:

"5G base stations have been deployed on the lighthouses on some uninhabited islands and offshore wind power platforms to achieve full signal coverage along the drone route. And through the technology of synesthesia, the flight altitude, speed and other status information of a drone are monitored in real time to ensure its safe flight."

In the eastern Chinese province of Jiangxi, meanwhile, 5G technology has been seamlessly integrated into the highway infrastructure, allowing drones to meticulously inspect traffic conditions.

5G is used in smart road-side devices programmed to flash brightly on foggy days.

And in southwestern Chongqing Municipality, the world’s first navigation system for underground traffic tunnels combines 5G and China’s Beidou satellite positioning technology.

Experts say the system provides enhanced precision, speed and stability in a groundbreaking advancement for underground navigation.

Jia Xi, director of transportation industry, China Mobile Communications Group Chongqing Co., Ltd.:

"We can see that our vehicle is driving on the right lane. On the conventional navigation app, we can see our car is jumping between the left and right lanes. But on the high-precision navigation app, it is shown clearly that our car continues moving on the right lane following the navigation."

Data shows that by the end of April, China had built more than 3.7 million 5G base stations, or about 26 per 10,000 people.
