Tokyo, Japan - June 19, 2024
The recent outbreak of streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) in Japan has reached unprecedented levels, raising concerns among experts and health authorities.

The number of 977 cases reported as of 2 June has surpassed the previous record and resulted in 77 deaths between January and March alone. This alarming increase has occurred following the relaxation of Covid-19 restrictions, and authorities have not yet clearly identified the cause of this increase.

STSS is a rare and serious bacterial infection, mostly caused by Group A Streptococcus (GAS) bacteria. This bacterium usually causes less severe infections such as pharyngitis, but can become invasive and cause STSS when it produces toxins that enter the bloodstream. Initial symptoms include fever, muscle pain and vomiting, but can quickly escalate to low blood pressure, swelling and multiple organ failure, leading to a state of shock that can be fatal. The mortality rate of STSS is high, with up to 30% of those affected dying despite treatment.
