A rescue operation is currently underway for two cave explorers who are reportedly missing in a cave in the municipality of Soba, Cantabria, since last Saturday.

The two explorers, aged 38 and 40, entered the Garma Ciega-Sima del Sombrero cave system, known for its high complexity with depths reaching 500 meters and shafts requiring advanced spelunking techniques.

According to a report received by emergency services (112) at 7:12 a.m. last Sunday, the spelunkers had not returned from inside the cave, triggering an alarm and prompting a search and rescue operation.

Specialists from the Guardia Civil's Mountain Rescue Service (GREIM) are leading the operation, supported by personnel from 112, local police officers, and volunteer spelunkers.

As of now, the explorers have not been located, and efforts are focused on the interior of the cave. The rugged terrain and cave conditions are proving challenging for the rescue efforts.

The spelunkers were equipped with appropriate spelunking gear, although the cave's interior conditions may have hindered their progress. The cause of their disappearance remains unknown, and investigations are ongoing to determine what transpired.
