Portland, OR, USA - June 24, 2024

Nolina, the resilient African cape porcupine residing at Oregon Zoo, marks a remarkable milestone today, June 24 as she turns 20, surpassing the average lifespan of her species in the wild. Known for her spunky demeanor and daily exercise routine, Nolina has captured the hearts of zoo visitors and caregivers alike.

In her golden years, Nolina maintains her vitality through brisk morning walks recommended by the zoo's veterinary staff. These strolls not only keep her physically fit but also mentally engaged, exploring the zoo's diverse habitats including the indoor rainforest and visits to fellow residents like sloths, piranhas, and flamingos.

"Her walks are shorter now, but she's still active and curious," commented keeper Kristina McMahon. "She enjoys her favorite snacks of corn on the cob, apples, and sweet potatoes as rewards for her efforts."

African cape porcupines like Nolina are among the largest porcupine species globally, boasting impressive black-and-white quills that can exceed a foot in length. Despite their formidable appearance, these creatures are known for their gentle nature, only deploying their quills defensively when threatened.
