STORYLINE:

The 15th Annual Meeting of the New Champions, also known as the Summer Davos, opened on Tuesday in the coastal city of Dalian in northeast China's Liaoning Province.

Themed "Next Frontiers for Growth," the three-day meeting gathers over 1,700 representatives of the political, business, academic and media communities in more than 100 countries and regions.

The call for strengthened partnership has rung clear at the Summer Davos as the world seeks new growth engines to propel a sluggish global economy.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): SIDDHARTH CHATTERJEE, UN Resident Coordinator in China
"China is looking towards a world in which we see more collaboration, more partnerships, because after all, this is the first time ever in the world that we are experiencing what I term as 'an interlocking crisis.' We had a crisis of a COVID pandemic, which had an economic impact. We're seeing a climate crisis, which is an existentialist threat to humanity. We are seeing conflicts. We're seeing rising inequality, rising food insecurity, rising energy challenges. These are affecting everybody. There is no one country which is not affected by it. Now, in order to overcome that, we need a true spirit of collaboration."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): SABRINA TORGAN, PhageLab, Chile
"All the environment in China embraces technology. And you're embracing AI. You're embracing a lot of biotech companies. You have a lot here and you embrace science. So I think China is really going to impose the world to work more on that and to work together on having better connections also between science. That's something that we need to interconnect in the world."

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): ESPEN MEHLUM, Head, Energy Transition Intelligence and Regional Acceleration at World Economic Forum
"So worldwide there we have a climate issue and energy is part of solving that. We must succeed in reducing the carbon intensity of our energy consumption.
We need to make sure that this clean energy revolution touches all countries of the world. That's where China is playing a leading role because China is now the biggest manufacturer or many of these technologies and has built a very strong position in the global markets. This has really helped also reduce the cost of clean energy for consumers in many countries and benefiting those and giving access to the technology revolution."
