Wild elephant stops pickup truck to check for food
A wild elephant strolling along a road stopped a passing truck to check it for food.
Footage shows the jumbo ambling on the edge of the road when it heard the vehicle approaching behind in Chachoengsao, Thailand on May 24.
It halted as the pickup truck approached and turned back, waving its trunk before blocking the driver's path.
The animal then sniffed on the vehicle's cargo bed but eventually let the man and his family pass through when it found nothing.
Driver Sanit Ketnil said: ‘I've been there many times, and the elephant liked to check the trucks no matter the size. It has stopped ten and six-wheelers before.'
Thailand has up to 3,500 elephants in the wild. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in the country at the beginning of the 20th century.
The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
