Peregrine falcon attacks drone during routine inspection at China’s grand canyon
On the afternoon of June 20, a routine drone inspection at Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Scenic Area, southern China, took an unexpected turn when the drone was suddenly struck by a peregrine falcon. The falcon swooped past the camera before disappearing, only to reappear moments later and launch a direct attack on the drone.
Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon is renowned for its dramatic landscapes and rich biodiversity, drawing numerous visitors. According to the local forestry department, the peregrine falcon is a nationally protected species in China, famed for its incredible flight speed, reaching up to 320 kilometers per hour, making it the fastest bird in the world.
Although the drone was not severely damaged by the encounter, the incident served as a reminder for scenic area staff to exercise caution when operating drones in wildlife habitats to avoid unnecessary disturbances. This experience also provided a rare wildlife observation opportunity for the staff. They expressed a renewed commitment to preserving the natural environment of the Grand Canyon, ensuring that wildlife can continue to thrive in the area.
