Belgian tourist drowns while British woman is rescued on choppy Thai beach
A Belgian tourist drowned and two others were rescued after allegedly ignoring weather warnings at a beach in Thailand.
The holidaymakers reportedly disregarded the red flags to paddle off Freedom Beach on the island of Phuket strong waves struck them on June 22.
Belgian man Allan Deraut Luvovadio, 28, from Chatelet, was swept away by the currents, while two others, identified in local reports as British woman Asilo Junarra Heyzel and Yemeni man Faisal Fadhel Mohammed Hasan, were rescued by lifeguards.
Police Lieutenant Colonel Eksak Kwanwan of the Karon district police station said officers received a report at 3:50 pm on June 22.
Rescue teams spent two days scouring the stormy sea before Allan's decomposing body washed up on the shore today, June 24, at 4:30 am local time.
Police Colonel Khundet Na Nongkhai, superintendent of Karon Police Station, said: 'The dead man was lying face down, wearing only black swimming trunks. His body was later transported to the Vachira Phuket Hospital for a post-mortem exam.'
This is the third reported drowning incident at beaches on Phuket island this month.
On June 9, US veteran James Everett du Bois, 49, was swimming with his family at Nai Harn Beach when he was swept away by a powerful current.
Lifeguards rescued his Thai wife, Siriarmorn Phetarwut, 49, and their son, Boonpat, 3, but James was dragged further from the coast. His lifeless body washed ashore on June 10.
While on June 17, James Edmond Newman, 44, from New York, and his Thai girlfriend Waranya Chanphai, 48, from Surin province were found drowned at Mai Khao Beach in Phuket amid rough weather.
Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are at the start of their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms. The rudimentary infrastructure often struggles with the deluge, leading to widespread flash floods.
