Iconic chimneys and cooling towers demolished in central China
Iconic chimneys and cooling towers have been demolished in central China's Zhengzhou City on June 25.
Three towering chimneys and three massive cooling towers located within the Xinneng Electric Power Co., Ltd. compound came crashing down amidst controlled explosions, marking a significant step forward for the city's urban renewal project.
The demolition commenced promptly at 9:30 a.m. and was completed smoothly within a brief 20 seconds. As the final countdown echoed through the site, the six iconic structures—three 210-metre-tall chimneys and three 105-metre-high cooling towers—were successfully dismantled, with billowing yellow smoke symbolising the passage of history.
Records indicate that Xinneng Electric Power Co., Ltd. was formerly known as the old Zhengzhou Thermal Power Plant, a company with deep historical roots that once provided 60% of Zhengzhou's centralized heating. However, with urban development and heightened environmental standards, the company relocated to a new site in 2018, and the old plant ceased operations by the end of 2019.
These chimneys and cooling towers, symbols of the old plant, witnessed Zhengzhou's industrial development history. Their demolition signifies the arrival of a new era in urban development. Post-demolition, the site will be integrated into Zhengzhou's urban renewal project, aimed at creating a model demonstration combining industry, education, residential, and leisure facilities, injecting new impetus into Zhengzhou's high-quality development efforts.
