A level-crossing barrier crashed onto a bungling driver's car when they refused to stop despite warning signals.

The bar gate was lowered to clear the railroad for an incoming train, but motorists hurriedly tried to beat it until the last minute, causing one of the vehicles to become damaged in Bangkok, Thailand, on June 18.

Footage shows the barrier caught on the tail of a silver sedan that ignored the traffic warnings. The accessory dragged and dangled on the back of the car, and one side of it broke off.

Onlooker Mina Techo said: ‘It was a common thing to see this. The drivers violate the traffic sign. Most of them were motorcycle riders with wheels ending up stuck on train tracks.'

The penalty for violating railroad traffic rules can include imprisonment for up to ten years, a fine of up to 20,000 baht, or both.

Despite being one of the wealthiest countries in Asia, Thailand suffers from chronic underinvestment in its highways and education, contributing to its poor road safety levels. Only a handful of African countries are worse.
