Heroic villager rescues preschooler from deep well in northern China
On June 20, in Anping County, Hengshui City, Hebei Province, a 3-year-old boy was rescued after falling into a deep well.
The fire department quickly responded to the emergency call. Upon arrival, they learned that the newly constructed well, about 15 meters deep with a 30-centimeter diameter, had no water but contained trace amounts of toxic gases. The boy had fallen in while playing nearby, making the situation critical.
Rescuers devised a plan to supply fresh air continuously to prevent the boy from suffocating and sent down a milk bottle with a safety rope to keep him nourished. Due to the narrow well opening, it was impossible for an adult to descend, prompting the team to use an excavator to widen the area around the well. However, the machine could only remove the top sections of the well pipe before space constraints halted further digging.
Realizing that time was of the essence, the commander called on the community for assistance. Zhao Chenglong, a villager with dwarfism, volunteered. Standing just over a meter tall, Zhao was assessed as capable of performing the rescue.
Firefighters quickly trained Zhao and, after ensuring he understood the procedure and was equipped with safety measures, lowered him into the well. Zhao successfully secured the rescue rope around the boy, allowing both of them to be pulled to safety.
Thanks to the prompt and coordinated efforts, the boy was unharmed. The Anping County Fire Rescue Brigade awarded Zhao Chenglong with an "Outstanding Fire Volunteer" certificate for his bravery.
