American retiree 'attacks rented house in Bali over contract dispute'
An American retiree allegedly tore down his rented home when the owner refused to extend his contract.
John Doe, from Alaska, had been living in the traditional Balinese-style house for ten years and asked his landlord, Wayan Darta, to renew their agreement in Bali, Indonesia.
However, John was allegedly furious that Wayan did not want to continue renting the place, so the pensioner hired workers to demolish parts of the house before he returned it to the owner.
Footage shows John standing on the fence and holding his phone while the workers remove panels from the roof. He said in the video: ‘Goodbye, Wayan.'
In another video, he was again confronted by the landlord Wayan but he said: ‘Okay, I will tell you again, remove yourself from my property. Do you understand me, Mr Darta? Remove yourself from my property.
‘Go to your house and relax. Have some coffee.'
When the lease contract expired three days later, John was already gone from the house, but the devastated local found the property severely damaged.
Parts of the roof were missing, the ceiling had been smashed open, and the front door was gone.
Wayan said: ‘I was shocked to see my house just demolished. In fact, the contract didn't end when they started.'
Police are investigating the incident to see if they can charge the American man for his alleged behaviour.
Wayan has also asked them to claim compensation from the American.
