A Turkish warship visited the Philippines as the Southeast Asian country faced territorial threats from expansionist Communist China.

The Turkish Navy's Ada-class corvette TCG Kinaliada docked in Manila on June 26 to mark 75 years of diplomatic relations between Turkey and the Philippines.

Philippine Navy and Army officials, the crew of the TCG Kinaliada, and Turkish Ambassador to the Philippines Niyazi Evren Akyol attended a cocktail reception on the ship.

Philippine Navy spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Rear Admiral Roy Vincent Trinidad said: 'We are grateful for this opportunity to celebrate the significant ties between the Philippine Navy and the Turkish Navy, as well as the strengthening bond between our nations that goes back to our established diplomatic relations in 1949.'

The corvette is on an expedition around Asia and will stay in the Philippines until June 28.

It previously visited Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong, and Indonesia, and is set to make more port calls at several destinations in the region.

The visit comes amid mounting tensions between the Philippines and China in the South China Sea.
