STORYLINE:
Electric vehicles (EVs) will be the future and far more production is needed to benefit the world, Jeremy Jurgens, managing director of the World Economic Forum (WEF), has said in an interview with Xinhua during the just-concluded 2024 Summer Davos.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): JEREMY JURGENS, Managing director of the World Economic Forum (WEF)
"If we want to meet our targets for 2030 around decarbonization, if we want to make our targets for carbon peaking, and also a net zero by 2050 or 2060, then we'll actually need even more production than we have today. So the extent that we actually have high levels of production, and that we actually get scale benefits from lowering the cost, there's a global benefit here. Now, this is extremely disruptive for traditional manufacturers that haven't made the transition from internal combustion engines to EVs. It's pretty clear that the future will be in electrical vehicles. Overall, I think we still need to have actually far more production of electrical vehicles for the electrified economy, far more production on solar capacity, on batteries, and the more that we can gain advances in those and disseminate these technologies globally so that everyone can actually start to a shift, the energy consumption patterns to more electrified economy. This will be to a global benefit."
Jurgens also noted that China is not the only major economy that has made investments and industrial policy to support the development of green technologies.
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): JEREMY JURGENS, Managing director of the World Economic Forum (WEF)
"If we look across all of the countries to the all the major economies, Europe, U.S., China, they've understandably made investments, industrial policy to actually support development of green technologies. So in this way, China is not alone. If you look at the actual market dynamics here, this is one of the most competitive markets in the world, right? The rate of growth of the EV utilization here is really high and probably growing fastest anywhere in the world."
