Police arrested two suspects for allegedly smuggling millions of amphetamine pills marked with the Liverpool FC logo.

The suspects reportedly ran a logistics company and used it as a front to distribute drugs in the northern province of Chiang Rai, Thailand.

Police Lieutenant General Krittapon Yeesakhon, commissioner of Provincial Police Region 5, said in a June 28 press conference that the arrest was made following a tipoff from an undercover informant that 10 parcels containing illegal goods were being stored at a delivery centre in Lampang province.

When they inspected the packages, they found 1.5 million meth pills in bags stamped with the iconic red Liverpool FC logo.

The sender only gave their name as 'Sakhon' while the intended recipient was 'Pang', who lives in the capital Bangkok.

Investigations found that the origin of the shipment was a store in Chiang Rai province owned by a couple, Sunitra and Wattana.

The couple gave police details on the two suspects who provided the shipment.

The suspects, who were not named by officials, were then summoned to the Mae Chan Police Station. However, they allegedly tried to flee through the Mae Fah Luang–Chiang Rai International Airport, where they were arrested.

The pair allegedly confessed that they had planned to escape to Bangkok and reportedly admitted they were involved in the drug smuggling operation. They were handed over to the inquiry officer for further legal action.

Anucha Chaiyawong, director of law enforcement at the Narcotics Control Office Region 5, said: 'The printing of football team logos is likely due to manufacturing orders by drug dealers in each batch.

'Previously, we discovered other peculiar logos on drug shipments, such as Y1, Apple, or Lexus.

'The football team logo found this time is a first in the northern region's smuggling operations, although the central office of the Narcotics Suppression Bureau should have found some before.

'As for the drugs, we will analyse the components and cross-reference with our database to see where they came from.'

Thailand has a booming trade in methamphetamine, known locally as yaba, with single pills available for around 20 baht (0.54 USD). They are popular in bars, nightclubs, strip clubs and even used by truck drivers to help them stay awake for hours on end.

Production is centered in the lawless northern states of neighbouring Myanmar, where rival militias and even the army vie for control of the lucrative trade.
