"According to Iran's Election Headquarters, the 14th Iranian presidential election will enter a runoff with the former Health Minister Masoud Pezeshkian and the former chief nuclear negotiator Saeed Jalili leading in the first round, but no one gets the minimum threshold of 50 percent of votes. The runoff will be held on next Friday."
Iran's Election Headquarters Spokesperson Mohsen Eslami said turnout of the voting stands at 40 percent.
Pezeshkian got 10,415,991 of votes, accounting for over 42 percent of the total votes counted, while Jalili got 9,473,298, or over 38 percent.
Parliament Speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf got 3,383,340, or 13.8 percent, and Mostafa Pourmohammadi, a former interior minister and justice minister, got 206,397, or 0.8 percent.
To secure the presidency, a candidate must obtain more than 50 percent of the total votes in the first round. For the run-off, whoever gets more votes will claim the victory.
Iran's 14th presidential election, initially set for 2025, was rescheduled following the unexpected death of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his entourage in a helicopter crash on May 19.
