Lake Van, Türkiye's largest lake, has seen a surge in scuba diving since the world's largest microbialite tower was discovered there in 2022.

Tourism officials and diving schools have noted a significant rise in demand, particularly from international enthusiasts drawn to the unique underwater landscapes and biodiversity of this captivating Turkish lake.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Turkish): FERHAT BASDINC, Member of the Van Vadi Nature Sports Club
"The world's largest microbialites are in Lake Van. We discovered another one during a training dive. It measures 31.7 meters in length."

Cevdet Ozgokce, Eastern Anatolia Regional President of the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TURSAB), emphasized that the rise in diving tourism would bring numerous visitors and generate significant income for the region.

However, Ozgokce noted that challenges remain, particularly with the issue of limited flight routes from other parts of the country.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Turkish): CEVDET OZGOKCE, Eastern Anatolia Regional President of the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies
"Flight schedules are very restricted, which is a significant concern for us. We couldn't welcome those who wanted to come. Especially in the summer when we are busy with the diving season, airlines often prioritize flights to more popular destinations in the west, which are home to popular tourist attractions."

Lake Van, situated at an altitude of 1,640 meters in the province of Van, covers an area of 3,713 square kilometers. It is the world's largest soda lake and Türkiye's largest lake.

The diving season started this year in mid-June.
