Huge fire erupts as rocket crash-lands during test in China
A huge fire erupted as a rocket crash-landed during a hot-fire test of the rocket propulsion system in central China.
The dramatic video was filmed in Gongyi City in Henan Province on June 30.
During the test of a first-stage nine-engine parallel propulsion system, the rocket ignited as expected, with the engine thrust reaching 820 tonnes.
However, a structural failure at the connection between the rocket and the test stand led to the rocket detaching and ascending briefly before the onboard computer shut it down. The rocket subsequently crashed into a mountainous area 1.5 kilometres southwest of the test site, where it disintegrated and ignited.
Emergency services, including the Gongyi Emergency Management Bureau, promptly responded to the scene. Preliminary information indicates that the accident site is far from the city centre, and Tianbing Technology had already coordinated with local authorities to ensure safety measures and evacuate nearby residents before the test.
Fortunately, no casualties have been reported so far.
Tianbing Technology, founded in 2019, is a notable private Chinese aerospace company specialising in the development of next-generation liquid rocket engines and medium to large liquid launch vehicles. Their Tianlong series, particularly the Tianlong-3, is designed for China’s satellite internet constellation, with performance on par with SpaceX’s Falcon 9.
This incident raises concerns about the planned July launch of Tianlong-3. A Tianbing Technology representative mentioned that adjustments to the launch schedule are likely, pending a thorough investigation into the cause of the failure.
The video was provided by local media with permission.
