A group of sanitation workers sparked widespread discussion due to their unusual cleaning method on a scorching summer day in northern China.

Video filmed in Dalian City in Liaoning Province on June 27 shows several sanitation workers, clad in sun-protective clothing and hats, kneeling on the ground and diligently scrubbing the zebra crossings with cloths. Despite their clothes being soaked with sweat, they remained steadfast, silently completing what seemed like a straightforward yet challenging task.

The scene quickly stirred debate on the internet. Many netizens expressed admiration for the hard work of the sanitation workers but simultaneously questioned the appropriateness of this cleaning method.

Some commented, "It's too inhumane to make workers kneel on the ground in such hot weather," while others queried, "Is such meticulous cleaning really necessary when the roads get dirty again in just a few minutes with all the traffic?"

In response to public concerns, the authorities explained. They clarified that the sanitation workers resorted to manual scrubbing because there were stubborn stains on the zebra crossings that couldn't be removed with high-pressure water jets.

However, acknowledging the potential health impact of this method on the workers, they have decided to discontinue the practice of kneeling to scrub the crossings.

The video was provided by local media with permission.
