Pakistani officials commended the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), a flagship project of the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative, emphasizing its role in enhancing sustainable development in Pakistan.

The officials spoke in Islamabad on Friday last week at the release event for an Annual Sustainability Report 2023.

SOUNDBITE 1 (English): YOUSUF RAZA GILANI, Chairman of the Senate of Pakistan
"Since its inception, CPEC has unfolded at an accelerated pace and extended the routes to various sectors. Both countries have expressed their shared commitment to sustaining economic growth while prioritizing environmental sustainability. It is a transformative journey. CPEC has become a catalyst not only for investment, but also for facilitating technology transfer, sharing knowledge, enhancing capacity and developing skills with a cumulative investment of U.S. dollars 62 billion."

SOUNDBITE 2 (English): AHSAN IQBAL, Pakistani Minister for Planning, Development and Special Initiatives
"It is actually a vision of shared prosperity, which is embedded in the aspirations of both leadership and people of China and Pakistan. And I'm sure that just as we did phase one successfully, phase two will bring more opportunities of prosperity, development, not just for China, Pakistan, but for the entire region."

Launched in 2013, CPEC is a corridor linking the Gwadar Port in southwest Pakistan's Balochistan province with Kashgar in northwest China's Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region. The first phase focuses on energy, transport, and industrial cooperation, while the new phase expands to the fields of agriculture and livelihood, among others.
