STORYLINE:

Since a sodium-ion battery energy storage station was put into operation in Nanning, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, it has carried out charges and discharges 40 times, an engineer told Xinhua.

The Fulin sodium-ion battery energy storage station was launched on May 11, as an initial phase of an energy-storage project.

Funded and built by the Guangxi branch of China Southern Power Grid, the station has an initial capacity to produce 10 megawatt-hours (MWh).

After completion, the project's overall capacity will reach 100 MWh, capable of generating 73 million kilowatt-hours (kWh) of clean electricity annually, which can meet the power demand of approximately 35,000 households every year.

SOUNDBITE (Chinese): LUO CHUANSHENG, Senior engineer, Guangxi branch of China Southern Power Grid
"The Fulin sodium-ion battery energy storage station can complete a single charge and discharge within eight hours. It can intelligently engage in peak load regulation through the 10-kilovolt connected lines, realizing flexible storage and release of electricity generated by new energy. It serves as a stabilizer for the power grid's safe operation. Since the station was put into operation more than one month ago, it has carried out charges and discharges 40 times. The operating temperature of the batteries remains stable at 28 degrees Celsius. The energy conversion efficiency has exceeded 90 percent."
