Food vlogger dies from stroke after devouring piles of fried chicken
A Filipino food vlogger died from a stroke after devouring piles of deep-fried chicken and rice.
Dongz Apatan, 38, recorded himself gobbling up the crispy, salty chicken for lunch in Iligan City in the Philippines on June 13.
He paired the meat with mountains of white rice and a chilli soy sauce dip, relishing the oily and sodium-rich foods for his 400,000 followers on Facebook.
However, he was rushed to the hospital the following day, June 14, when he suffered a massive stroke.
Doctors tried to revive him, but he was declared dead due to a blood clot in his brain.
Cardiologist Dr. Tony Leachon said: 'According to the doctors who treated him in the emergency room, he had blood clots in the brain. So, that means his blood pressure increased and blood vessels in his brain ruptured. So, the cause of death was hemorrhagic stroke.'
Dongz's sister Leah said he had been suffering high blood pressure but defended his vlogs, claiming he only ate a lot when he was on camera.
She said: 'We're hurt that people are turning him into a laughing stock, like they have no respect because they get incorrect information from content.
'There are a lot of comments that he deserved to die because he was greedy about food, but it's just content. He doesn't really eat much. He doesn't really finish everything either. He is not greedy. He has helped a lot of people.'
Dongz, the breadwinner of his family, left behind three children.
His relatives are now seeking financial aid to put the youngsters through school.
Meanwhile, Dr. Tony warned the public to be mindful of what they eat.
He said: 'We recommend fish and chicken over red meat. And then, almost half of the plate is vegetables. And then fruits.
'I guess this is a lesson for all of us. If this becomes a habit, your habits dictate your behaviour, and your behaviour determines your destiny as well. Too much eating is not good. Especially when it's salty, fatty, and sweet.'
