Cargo ship appears to vanish into thin air off Kent in optical trick, UK

A cargo ship was seen appearing to 'vanish into thin air' off the coast of Kent, UK yesterday (June 30) due to the curvature of the Earth.

The ship is seen initially loaded with containers passing the Red Sands towers in the Thames Estuary.

However, as it proceeds further out to sea, the ship can slowly be seen to start vanishing - as if it's being erased bit by bit by an eraser.

The unusual effect is due to the curvature of the Earth at long distances - in reality the reason the ship disappears is because the curve of the Earth extends below the viewer's horizon.

The clip also shows a slight Fata Morgana effect, with the ship appear to hover slightly above the horizon.

The unusual phenomenon was filmed looking far out to sea to the east of Sheerness beach, using a long lens.
