Severe turbulence injured 40 passengers on a flight from Madrid forcing an emergency landing in Brazil.

The Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner operated by Air Europa left Spain bound for Montevideo in Uruguay at 11:57 pm local time on Sunday evening with 325 people onboard.

But the plane was reportedly hit by violent turbulence leaving dozens injured when they were flung around the cabin. Passengers suffered fractures, cuts and bruises. At least four of them were still in hospital on Monday afternoon.

Officials said the pilot of flight UX045 requested an emergency landing at Natal airport in north-eastern Brazil at 2.32am local time.

An Air Europa spokesman said the airport in Brazil 'was the airport that could most quickly attend to passengers with medical needs'.

Air Europa said a second plane would be sent from Madrid later on Monday to pick up the passengers and continue the trip to Uruguay.

In May, a British passenger onboard a Singapore Airlines flight from London Heathrow was killed when the plane was rocked by turbulence in Burmese airspace, forcing an emergency landing in Bangkok, Thailand.
