In a dramatic rescue operation, an elephant calf was saved from drowning in the Aie River near the newly constructed Aie Powali bridge.

The incident took place in Chirang district on June 30.

The incident occurred at approximately 8:07 AM when residents spotted the struggling calf drifting downstream.

The quick-thinking locals alerted authorities, leading to the swift deployment of rescue teams from the Runikata Range and the Protection Squad. Veterinary doctors Dr. Daoharu Boro and Dr. Prabhat Basumatary were also on standby for any medical emergencies.

The rescue team successfully lifted the distressed female calf, approximately one and a half months old, from the riverbed. The calf was taken to the Runikata Range office for immediate care and medical treatment, where she was fed milk products like Lactogen to ensure her well-being.

Two rehabilitation plans were initially considered: reuniting the calf with her mother and herd or transferring her to the Manas National Park Rescue and Rehab Centre. Despite efforts, the team could not locate the mother, making the reunion impossible. Consequently, the calf was referred to Manas National Park, where she is now safe and receiving proper care.

This successful rescue operation highlights the coordinated efforts of local authorities and wildlife rescue teams in protecting and preserving India's wildlife.
