Clashes broke out on Monday between Turkish forces and militants from various pro-Ankara factions in northern Syria. Widespread protests against Türkiye ensued in Turkish-held areas, pro-Syrian government media outlets and activists reported.
Confrontations took place in Afrin, Azaz, and al-Bab after the Turkish closure of the al-Rai and Bab al-Salama border crossings. Military reinforcements, including special forces, were dispatched, according to the report by Syrian media outlet Sham FM.
The report said that around 25 militants had been killed or injured, and that substantial material damage had been inflicted on civilian homes.
Meanwhile, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported casualties in clashes and sporadic gunfire in Afrin and Jarabulus. The human rights group reported four civilians killed and more than 20 others wounded, adding that fighting is still ongoing in Afrin and areas north of Aleppo.
The violence has been coupled with widespread protests in northern Syria.
In the Aleppo countryside and northwestern Syria's Idlib province, protests have spread across areas controlled by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and Turkish-backed National Army.
