The overflowing of major rivers has led to severe flooding in Manipur on May 28, 2024, but the blame lies not with nature. Human actions, particularly the rampant use of plastic bottles, contribute to this crisis.

Tina woke up to a heavy morning rain and chatted online with friends about the continuous downpour over the past few days. Hearing that the nearby Sekmai River was nearing flood levels, she decided to take a morning walk to see it.

Upon arriving, Tina was struck by the sight of piles of plastic bottles stuck in the swirling river.

I woke up to this heavy morning rain and I was chatting with my friends online about the continuous rain for the past few days. I heard that our nearby local river "Sekmai River" is nearing flood levels. So I just went with my friends to see the river and to get a morning walk. When I reached there, I saw this piled up plastic bottles stuck and going in circles, there in the river. It never crossed my mind before. But after seeing that, I had this sudden realisation that due to years of using plastic bottles non-stop has somehow contributed to this huge change in our climate today. Things that have never happened before in Manipur has been going on lately. To mention a few, summer temperature degree reaching new heights every year, hailstorms and now floods. It's heartbreaking to see this kind of changes and to know that it is because of our long term fault. To be very honest, I just took a video and shared it online for my friends and family to see. I never expected my video would get such kind of reaction. But I'm honestly very grateful that I got such an opportunity to share this video to everyone and I hope I can contribute a little bit to save and conserve our planet earth for us and the future generations to come.
