Flood waters that have deluged almost whole of the world heritage Kaziranga National Park of Assam, last night swept away a one month old elephant calf. The calf which was battling the strong flood water currents was eventually rescued by the forest and centre for wildlife rescue and rehabilitation staff.
The special operation amidst the flood waters carried out at night lasted for several hours. The calf had to be provided breathing support before it was shifted to the centre.
Earlier one rhino calf was rescued however in this case the calf had to be sedated during the operations.
Meanwhile 17 animals for park have died in the floods and over 72 animals rescued so far. 144 forest camps of the park remain marooned, the park has 233 such camps vital to the protection of flora and funa of the park.
According to Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, the park has lost a rhino calf this flood and the government have added an extra police battalion for the protection of the wild animals in this vulnerable period.
Kaziranga is home to over 4261 one horn rhinos, 121 Royal Bengal Tiger and world largest population of wamp deer and water buffalo.
