STORYLINE:
Turkish Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya informed Friday about a recent leak of data on social media regarding Syrian migrants residing in the country.
He said the government had launched an investigation into the incident.
When speaking to reporters in the central Anatolian city of Kayseri, the minister said the leaked ID data covered the period before Sept. 8, 2022, but not the updated data after this date.
The incident came after anti-Syrian riots in several provinces of the country.
The riots first started on June 30 in Kayseri province after Turkish authorities arrested a Syrian man for allegedly sexually abusing a seven-year-old Syrian girl. Local residents set fire to houses and businesses belonging to Syrians and vandalized their vehicles.
The violence then spread to the provinces of Hatay, Kilis, Gaziantep, Konya, and Antalya while the Turkish government has been urging for calm.
Yerlikaya said that 855 suspects were detained following anti-Syrian riots in Kayseri, and 13 of them were arrested.
